Forged on thick slabs of silver, these coins present Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom and patron goddess of Athens on the obverse. The reverse features the Athenian Owl, standing for all the wisdom, knowledge, and erudition of that great city-state. The owl is Athena’s familiar, and, according to legend, she sometimes took the form of her owl. President Teddy Roosevelt was said to have carried an Athenian Owl coin in his pocket, which in turn inspired him to order the redesign of U.S. coins in the early 1900s.
